Reading University Caving Club

Events This Term

Somehow or other it appears that we have managed to organise LOADS of events for the coming term, even before it’s started! I can’t help feeling something must be wrong here – has the club ever been this organised before?! We’ve got plenty of trips to look forwards to, as well as a number of socials in the works – pub crawls, parties, a trip to Go Ape! (TBC), etc, etc. Thanks to the committee for planning all this 🙂

Anyway, I have updated the calender on the top right of every page to display all the events that we’re planning at the moment. Feel free to navigate through this calendar, and click on the days that are highlighted in yellow to view full details of the events that are happening on those days. I’ve also updated the Trips page to include details of all upcoming trips.

Note: it’s worth bearing in mind that some of these events and dates are provisional, so remember to check this site for further details nearer the time… If you are interested in attending any event, please feel free to get in touch!

It looks like we’ve got a brilliant term ahead of us!

Christmas Party 2011

Description:

The 2011 RUCavers Christmas party! This is a night that is guaranteed to be remembered – featuring games, much merriment, and copious amounts of alcohol… We generally ‘theme’ our Christmas parties, with everyone dressing up as something related to that theme. The theme this year has yet to be announced, however it’s bound to be something unusual!

At present we’re in the early stages of planning this event, and will provide further details nearer the time…

Where:

A house somewhere in Reading (location TBC).

When:

The evening / night of Saturday December 17th – Note: this is TBC.

What to Bring:

  • Your costume for this year’s theme
  • Plenty of alcohol
  • Christmas presents?

Go Ape! 2011

Description:

We’re currently thinking of going on a Social trip to Go Ape!… For those who have never been before, it’s like a giant obstacle course involving ropes, ladders, bridges, zip-wires and giant swings – but in a forest, more than 10 metres off the ground!

We last visited Go Ape! several years ago, and a good time was had by all. This event is still in the early stages of planning, so all details are provisional – particularly the dates.

Where:

Go Ape!, near Bracknell. Meeting in the car park of the Athletics Pavilion – see building 43 on this Map [PDF file].

When:

At some point during the weekends of 12th-13th November and/or 19th-20th November – exact dates and times TBC

What to Bring:

  • Money for entrance to Go Ape! Exact price TBC, but likely to be around £20.
  • Old comfortable clothes.

Halloween Social 2011

Description:

We are currently planning a club social for Halloween. It will most likely take the form of a House Party, and involve plenty of costumes, drinking, and competitions. If it’s anything like last year, the results should be ‘interesting’, to say the least! At present we’re in the early stages of planning this event, and will provide further details nearer the time…

Where:

A house somewhere in Reading (probably!). Details TBC.

When:

The evening / night of Monday October 31st – this is TBC.

What to Bring:

  • Your Halloween Costume
  • Plenty of Alcohol

Start of Term Presentation and Meetup / Social

Description:

This is a good chance for new or potential members to meet and get to know some of the older club members. Firstly we’ll be running through our presentation again, for anyone who happened to miss it on Thursday… After that we shall meet everyone else outside the Palmer Building on Campus, and then take you to the College Arms, which is where the club usually meets up every Monday evening. Here you can find out more about the club and our plans for this term, as well as sign up for any club trips you may be interested in going on.

Rumours that this event will suddenly turn into a mad pub crawl that takes us right around Reading are at present completely unfounded! 😛 But even if that turns out not to be on the cards this Monday, then you can be sure it will be the next!!

By the way, you are very welcome to turn up even if you’re not a member and aren’t interested in caving – we always enjoy meeting new people, and it should be a fun night out!

Where / When:

You’re welcome to come along to our Freshers presentation, which is being held at 7pm in Room 126 of the HUMSS Building – see building 1 on this Map [PDF file]

Or simply turn up outside the Palmer Building in the centre of campus at around 8-8:30pm. We will meet you there and take you to the College Arms, and then maybe beyond!

What to bring:

  • Money for drinks at the pub(s)
  • Money if you wish to join the club and/or sign up for any trips (there’s no pressure though!)
  • Any questions you have about the club or our activities

Description:

There are unconfirmed rumours that another weekend trip may be in the works for the weekend of 10th-11th December 2011… We know very few of the details for this trip at the current time, but you can be assured that they will appear here first as soon as we have them! Watch this space…

Where:

Who knows?!

When:

Friday 10th – Sunday 11th December. Possibly… Presumably we’ll be meeting outside the Athletics Pavilion as usual, but really we might be meeting anywhere… Returning on Sunday. Hopefully…

What to bring:

  • Standard trip gear (presumably)
  • Money for the trip
  • Enough equipment to prepare you for just about anything…

CHECC 2011

Description:

CHECC 2011 – what can I say?! Every year the Council of Higher Education Caving Clubs organises an event for every student caving club in the country. It’s not uncommon for around 300-450 students to attend this event!

Expect lots of wild partying, dancing (not always fully clothed!), competitions including the Annual Beer Pong and Squeeze Machine championships, exhibitions and displays – and many other things! We might even get around to doing some caving at some point… 😀

This year, CHECC is being held at the same venue as last year – the Dalesbridge centre in Yorkshire. We anticipate a lot of demand for this trip, so please sign up for it ASAP at one of our Monday pub gatherings, or by emailing our president.

Where:

The Dalesbridge Centre, near Settle, Yorkshire

When:

Friday 25th – Sunday 27th November. Meeting in the car park of the Athletics Pavilion at 6:00pm on the Friday – see building 43 on this Map [PDF file]. Returning very late in the evening on Sunday.

What to bring:

  • Standard trip gear
  • £40 [exact price TBC] to pay for the trip if you haven’t already, plus extra money to pay for any additional food or booze on the way there or back
  • Loads of alcohol!!
  • Your costume to go with the club’s ‘theme’ this year – precise details TBC
  • Plenty of warm clothes, thermals if you have them, and a warm sleeping bag. Yorkshire is cold!
  • A tent if you have one.
  • An expectation that just about anything might happen this weekend!

Further Information:

Mendips Weekend Trip (November 2011) – with Fireworks!

Description:

One of the most anticipated trips of the year! In early November each year, the club visits the Mendip Hills in Somerset. In addition to exploring some fantastic caves in the region, we always go to the stunning firework display that is held on the Saturday evening in the nearby village of Priddy. This somehow manages to combine the traditional feel of a small local display, with the quality and standards of a professional large-scale event!

The club has a tradition of attending this display whilst dressed up in full Halloween costume, in an attempt to scare entertain the locals. Several other caving clubs also have a tradition of visiting the Mendips this weekend as well, so it tends to be a very sociable trip! All in all, it’s not to be missed…

Sign up for this trip at one of our Monday pub gatherings, or by emailing our president.

Where:

We will be staying at the legendary Belfry Caving Hut in the Mendips, in Somerset.

When:

Friday 4th – Sunday 6th November. Meeting in the car park of the Athletics Pavilion at 6:30pm on the Friday – see building 43 on this Map [PDF file]. Returning late in the evening on Sunday.

What to bring:

  • Standard trip gear
  • £35 to pay for the trip (if you haven’t already!), plus extra money to pay for any additional food or booze on the way there or back
  • Your best Halloween costume
