Reading University Caving Club

Freshers Day Trip – 2011

Description:

We realise that joining a new club is a big commitment, particularly for a sport as unusual as caving! We’re therefore running a trip at the beginning of the Autumn Term to allow people to try it out. Anyone is welcome to come on this trip with us before they become a member – whether you’ve had some previous experience of caving, or you are completely new to the sport.

Even if you’re not sure if you want to join the club, these trips still provide a fantastic chance to try something new and get to meet some interesting people – and very cheaply! If nothing else, it should make for a fun day out 😉

You can sign up for a day trip at the Fresher’s Fayre or the presentation afterwards, or by emailing our president.

Where:

The Mendips (in Somerset), meeting in the car park of the Athletics Pavilion at Reading University – see building 43 on this Map [PDF file]

When:

On Saturday 8th October. Meeting at 9am, and returning by 8pm-9m. A long day, but worth it 😉

What to bring:

  • Old warm clothes (we will supply all gear and equipment for the cave itself).
  • Wellies if you have them (provided if not).
  • Spare underwear and socks, and a towel
  • £5 to pay for the trip (if you haven’t already!), and your Sports Fed card (obtainable at the Freshers Fayre or from the Student’s Union)
  • A packed lunch, and money to pay for a take-away evening meal
  • Lots of enthusiasm and a willingness to try new things!

Freshers Fayre 2011

Description:

For new students and other people who may be interested in joining up, this is a must-attend event! Here you can find out all about us and what we get up to… You will also be very welcome to put your name down for our ‘taster’ trips, or to sign up for our mailing list to be kept informed of club events. If you wish to join the club immediately we can help with that as well, however we understand this is a big commitment.

We will therefore be holding a presentation immediately after the fayre with lots of further information, so you can decide whether caving is something for you. We’ll be ending the day by going for a curry at BoB in town, and anyone is welcome to come along – whether or not you’re interested in joining the club 😉

If you’re unable to make the freshers fayre or presentation this year but would still like to become a member, we’d love to hear from you! Simply contact our president.

Where / When:

  • At our stall at the Fresher’s Fayre (held at the RUSU car park), between 11am and 4pm
  • We’re also holding a presentation afterwards at 5pm in Room 126 of the HUMSS Building – see building 1 on this Map [PDF file]

What to bring:

  • Lots of enthusiasm, and any questions you may have for us
  • A willingness to try new things…
  • Money if you wish to join now or sign up for a trip (there’s no pressure though!)
  • For current members: club hoodies / t-shirts, any publicity material or ‘gimmicks’ you think may help, loads of enthusiasm, and all your powers of persuasion!

SRT Training Session

Description:

To access some of the deeper and more vertical caving systems, you will use a special system known as Single Rope Technique (SRT). These types of caves are particularly common in Yorkshire and Derbyshire, which are among the most popular caving regions with members. SRT will add a whole new dimension to caving, and opens up the possibility of plenty of further exploration.

The club will provide you with full SRT training to ensure you are completely comfortable before using it underground. The training takes place at the local climbing wall, and there is always a fun and relaxed atmosphere. People learn the techniques at different rates, however as a general rule we require everyone to have attended at least 3 training sessions before allowing them to enter any cave that involves SRT. If you plan to come to Yorkshire or Derbyshire with us, you should definitely attend!

To sign up for a training session, please meet us at the College Arms on the Monday evening before the session, or contact the president.

Where:

Reading Climbing Centre, meeting at the Athletics Pavilion / Club Tackle Store (see building 43 on this Map [PDF file]).

When:

Wednesday evenings between 2nd November – 7th December (TBC).

What to bring:

  • Comfortable old clothing (e.g. tracksuit or running trousers)
  • ~ £6.50 to pay for entry to the climbing centre (a bit more may be a good idea, as we sometimes end-up in a pub!)
  • The club’s useful Guide to SRT
  • OPTIONAL: snack food / drink

Further Information:

Meeting at the College Arms

College ArmsThe Reading University Caving Club meets every Tuesday during term time from around 8pm at the College Arms, Wokingham Road, Reading (see this Map). It’s the best place to get all the latest gossip about what things are being planned in the club, as well as to sign up for trips, and simply to have an enjoyable night out! Sometimes we end up walking down the road to the nearby Up The Junction pub later on in the night…

We’re an incredibly friendly and welcoming bunch, and we always like to see new people on Tuesdays! No matter what the time of year, whether you’re a new or older member, or are not even a part of the club at all! If you’d like to join the club we can help with that as well, but there’s definitely no pressure! So please do come and meet us – it’s always fun…

If you’d like more information on how to find us, or would like to arrange for someone to meet you somewhere beforehand, please get in touch with our social secretary or president, who will be very happy to help!

We’ll look forward to seeing you!

Henley Pub Crawl – the aftermath!

Swimming in The Thames

On Monday, we completed our annual 9 mile pub crawl to Henley. The weather wasn’t quite as good as normal, but somehow or other this didn’t detract from the event – if anything, it added atmosphere… The theme this year was ‘Harry Potter’, and among other diversions we had fun attempting to unmask the Dark Wizard from our midst…

Sadly, I only had a chance to complete the final stretch of the walk between Shiplake and Henley, but seemed to have picked one of the best sections of the route! Miraculously the others arrived at almost exactly the same time as my train – a huge coincidence considering that Shiplake is the only convenient station along the route!

We had our customary swim in the Thames (see photo above), and arrived in Henley just as it got dark. After celebrating our arrival at the local Weatherspoon’s, we then headed back to Reading, and ended up having a rather wild House Party at Elsie, Alice and Penny’s place 🙂

I’m already looking forwards to next year’s Henley Pub Crawl…

Trip to Yorkshire

Gaping Gill

Last weekend we went on a club trip to Yorkshire. Although much smaller than most of our trips, it was a particularly enjoyable one.

Here are some of the things we got up to:

  • Worked out how to pack a small car with five person’s worth of luggage PLUS caving / SRT gear, and yet remain surprisingly comfortable!
  • Learnt how NOT to open or shut a car bonnet…
  • Left astonishingly early on Saturday morning to visit the fabulous Gaping Gill chamber (accessed via Bar Pot). I was really pleased to see this again after so long – it’s one of my all-time favourite caves. Did you know that this chamber has the second deepest shaft in Britain, and that the square volume of the cavern is comparable to most cathedrals?! This time I stood right underneath the waterfall for a while – I’m quite proud to be able to claim to have showered in the waters of Gaping Gill 😀
  • Played against Nottingham Uni (and were defeated) at Beer/Cocktail Pong.
  • Got up not so early on the Sunday, nursing hangovers, and tried to summon up the will to go caving on a rainy day… Sound familiar?! Ultimately it was worth it though!

Congratulations to Chrissie who completed both caves successfully despite very little experience with SRT, and to Chris who rigged his first caves! You both did brilliantly! Thanks also to J for leading, and for putting up with us…!

Back from Another Wales Trip

Cavers covered in mud

This weekend, the club went on another very successful trip to South Wales, staying at the Croydon.

Even before we started, we knew that it would be an eventful one – an astonishing 18 people turned up for it – unprecedented for the summer term?! And that indeed turned out to be the case…

Among other things, we:

  • Saw some spectacular helictites in Pant Mawr – well worth the hour’s walk to get there!
  • Indulged in our usual pastimes of Sock Wrestling, The Box Game, etc
  • Navigated our way intrepidly through a non-existent forest, attempting to find our next cave…
  • Once we eventually found it, spent the next hour inside the most pointless, stupid, ridiculous and muddy cave ever – but also one of the most entertaining! See the photo above for the aftermath…
  • Learnt the best techniques for preventing copious amounts of mud getting smeared in the interior of the minibus, whilst attempting to travel somewhere we could clean off …
  • … spent an hour cleaning the interior of the minibus, after said techniques failed spectacularly!
  • Learnt that the best answer to any question is invariably “SAUSAGES!!!”

In short, it was another excellent trip! Thanks to Elsie and the rest of the committee for organising it…

Tribute to Jenn

The Tribute to Jenn

The Tribute to Jenn

Mesh (our president during the last year) prepared this fantastic tribute to Jenn, which we presented to her during our most recent Monday evening gathering, as she prepared to leave Britain for the USA… Click on the image to see a full-sized version.

Jenn: you’ve been a huge part of this club over the past year, and we’ll all miss you a lot! Best of luck for all your future endeavours – and if you find yourself in Britain some time in the future, you know where to find us 😉

Beerfest 2011!

Yesterday we went on our annual club expedition to the Reading Beer Festival. As always, the weather was absolutely perfect – and so it was a fantastic chance for us to relax outside, socialise, and sample more than enough of the array of beers, ales, ciders, perries, and wines etc on offer…

We ended up crawling away quite late at night and turned up at the Global Cafe – where we had a lot of fun dancing to the live music.

Not sure if any photos were taken – if they were, they’ll end up on this site. A fantastic event as always – roll on next year!

New Committee for 2011/12!

On Monday 21st March 2011 we held our AGM at Sweeney & Todds pie shop, where our new committee for the 2011/12 academic year was elected.

Here are the details of who was elected to each position:

President: Elsie Brooks
Secretary: Chris Holt
Treasurer: Alice Dale
Social Secretary: Kathryn Hooper
Tackle Master: Florence Goodwin
Webmaster: Patrick Hathway

And last but not least, we have a new very important position:

Cake Secretary (!) : Chrissie Picken

This was one of the most eventful AGMs that the club has had in many years – indeed, I think I’m right in saying that virtually every position was seriously contested by at least two candidates!! I’m sure this is a very healthy sign for the club.

So congratulations to everyone who was elected – I think we’ve got an amazing year ahead of us!
