Reading University Caving Club

Hidden Earth 04

He04
Bad news, I have photos. This was the Hidden Earth conference, held last week at Kendal. Note for new peeps: The whole UK caving community gather once a year to swap stories, headgear, experience, dance moves and for some, saliva. Involves lectures, shopping, drinking and the legendary ‘stomp’. Those present: Henry, Nikki, J, John K, Dr Methane, Lisa, Anna, Paul, Andy, Esther, Joel, Duncan. Next year = the considerably nearer Mendips. See you there. BTW if you haven’t signed up for a fresher’s trip please do so a.s.a.p – we are being overwhelmed with demand and it may be 1st come 1st served. Oh what it is to be popular.

On a separate note, Reading is about to have a comedy festival. I note that YSS Kitchen CD regular Mitch Benn is playing South Street next Wednesday. Anyone interested? (and we will need to be quick). Alternatively, Jeremy Hardy at the Town Hall on Wed 20th?

Slideshow

Badger2
There is a slideshow & get together on Monday 4th October, to show people the sorts of things we get up to on weekends. Time: 8.00 pm. Place: Room 111, Palmer Building (middle of campus, big dark brick building with a clock on it). It’s a chance to meet the club, ask questions and sign up for trips. Afterwards we are heading for the College Arms pub on Wokingham Road (9.00 onwards), which is our new Monday night home.

New to Reading? Do something silly…

Hello. We’d like to take the opportunity to welcome anyone new to Reading University this year. Please come and see us at Freshers Fayre which is taking place on Wednesday 29 September from 11.00 to 17.00 in the students union. Henry, John, Oli, Nicki and er, another John will be manning the stand (possibly along with a supporting cast of dozens) and will be happy to have a cozy chat with anyone about what makes the caving club such a marvellous thing, and what trips are planned. We will also probably do some sort of ‘show & tell’ event the following Monday, and will post any details here. In the meantime please feel free to roam around this site to find out more or email our president Henry with any questions. And if you’re already a student or from the outside world you are more than welcome. Where have you been?

Lesser Spotted Spot Bird

Just to let you know that The Boy Paul and John ‘Fully Fitted’ Kitchin have taken to doing the pub quiz in the Queens Head over the Summer. Tuesday 8.30 p.m prompt. And we need help. In past attempts we have asserted that clotted cream is made by Oompah Loompahs using nozzles and that Hannibal crossed the Alps on a mechanical shark called Beverley. We have yet to win.

Video Killed The Caver Stereotype

tomintent

Cos we’ve worked out how to, here’s another short video, showing J & Tom solving that sleep in the car/sleep in the tent conundrum. The exit reminds me of the Dukes of Hazzard, only slower and more crap. More of this please.

On a separate note it’s J’s leaving do (forever!) and Mark H’s brief return gig in the Back of Beyond, Reading tomorrow from 7.30. Hey, another double celebration!

Tom Foord’s Guide to Modern Speleodance

tom2

As promised, a short (1Mb 30 second) instructional video starring Mr Tom Foord can be found here. It shows him demonstrating his soon-to-be-famous ‘jammer jammer jammer’ dance, falling over and then toppling out of a wheelchair. Top work. This is the first time I’ve worked with the medium of video, if it doesn’t work let me know.

On a separate note I managed to delete the entire photo archive today, hence is back up in streamlined and augmented form. Hence some new photos.

Yorkshire – 18-20 June 2004.

This weekend we:

-Leg wrestled with some silly Irish people
-Invented the five stool vertical squeeze trick
-Were rudely awakend by Toploader

And did some caving. Evidence can be found here. Quick reminder that we are meeting in the College Arms Monday, and the Queens Head pub quiz on Tuesday (8.30 at the latest). Bring a head full of trivia and nonsense.

Summer Pub Exchange

badgeghr

As part of our summer exchange programme RUCC will now be meeting in the College Arms, Wokingham Road on Monday nights from 9.00 onwards. A map showing location is here

Apparently the College Arms serves Fosters, Kronenbourg, John Smiths Smooth, Guinness, Guinness Extra Cold, Strongbow Cider and Marston’s Pedigree. Monday night is curry Night from 8pm – 10pm (curry, rice & garlic bread for only £3.45). There’s 60 car parking spaces, a wi-fi hotspot, a cash machine, two pool tables, a dart board, and a digital juke box. See, I’ve been doing research. Hope to see you there.
